Magic trick set FAQs

Who was Harry Houdini?
Harry Houdini was probably the most well-known magician of all time. He created his stage persona using the name Robert-Houdin and eventually developed a range of stage magic effects later to be known as escapology. Houdini was very skilled at lock picking and escaping straitjackets, and also used a full variety of conjuring techniques. He was known to have savvy business techniques that are on par with his performance skills.

Are there really such things as magic clubs/organizations that enforce the secrecy of magic tricks?
The main purpose of performing magic tricks is to amuse, entertain and create a feeling of wonder among the audience members. It is generally well known to the audience that magic is performed using trickery and deception to an extent yet they are willing to suspend disbelief to appreciate the magician’s skills. It is traditional for performers to refuse to reveal the secrets behind their tricks. Professional magician’s organizations are designed to provide a learning and sharing platform among magicians and only for magicians. Membership often requires a solemn commitment to what is called the “Magician’s Oath” to never reveal secrets of magic to those who don’t practice it.

Has magic ever been used illegally?

There have been instances when the concept of magic has been unethically used as a medium to extort on people for financial gain. During the late 1800s to the 1920s when there was a great religious movement sweeping the regions, a number of con artists participated in fraudulent practices to perform illusions such as table knocking, slate writing, and telekinetic events, to scare their clients. They claimed that these instances are the actions of ghosts and spirits. Harry Houdini himself spent much of his time to expose these operations. Cheating at card gambling is also an obvious and quite common ordeal. Street hustlers and game ringers would learn these card techniques for magicians and use them on unsuspecting customers, even to this modern day.

Is it possible to own certain magic methods?

Throughout history, there has been some controversial debate about the extent to which a professional magician can legally own certain magic tricks and illusions. There are arguments that magic trick methods are “intellectual property” and publication or sharing of these methods should follow strict codes developed by magicians’ organizations. On the other side, other people have argued that any type of knowledge should be freely available. Sharing of magic methods with the open public is referred to the community as exposure, and exposure ultimately ruins the feeling of wonder and mystery to that particular effect.
